What Is Coaching?

Coaching is essentially a conversation between a coach and a client starting with the aim of helping the client to live a fulfilling life.

When I coach I achieve this by helping clients to:

  • set goals that will add scientifically to their lives
  • achieve the goals they set on a consistent basis

During the coaching process I help by:

  • viewing situations from a different perspective and, in so doing, helping clients to enter into an exploration of ideas that they may not have previously considered
  • providing clarity around what clients really want
  • being a sounding board for ideas
  • supporting clients in making big decisions
  • challenging clients to expand their thinking process and make bold new decisions
  • directing clients in times of confusion, giving an opinion if required and brainstorming to flesh out new ideas
  • acknowledging and validating

What a coach is and is not

… A coach is a person who is your friend, someone who really cares about you.

… A coach is committed to helping you to be the best you can be.

… A coach will challenge you, not let you off the hook.

… Coaches have knowledge and experience because they've been there before. They aren't any better than the people they are coaching. In fact the people they coach may have natural abilities superior to their own. But because a coach has concentrated their power in a particular area for years, they can teach you one or two distinctions that can immediately transform your performance in a matter of moments.

… Sometimes coaches can teach you new information, new strategies and skills; they show you how to get measurable results.

…. Sometimes a coach doesn't even teach you something new, but they remind you of what you need to do at just the right moment and they push you to do it

Is coaching the same as mentoring?

Mentoring is the passing on of knowledge, experiences and skills usually by someone within the company who is older and wiser - usually more specifically career-oriented information. A mentor has normally achieved the goal themselves, while a coach may not have any experience in the given coaching area.

Is coaching the same as consulting?

Consulting is where you use your own skills to improve a given situation, as opposed to developing the client's skills to a level than can cope effectively with the situation.

Coaching is not therapy or counselling

Therapy and counselling tend to focus on feelings related to past events and processing such feelings. Coaching is oriented towards goal setting and encouraging the client to actively move forward. In short, counselling is looking backwards at the past and coaching is looking forward to the future.
